Add a bit of Mariah Carey to your wedding

I am having trouble getting my fiancee to agree to have some sort of Mariah stuff at our wedding… can you suggest some compromises I can make without making the wedding all about Mariah? - Jessie in trouble in Rhode Island

Hi Jessie,
Firstly congratulations on your upcoming wedding, it’s such an exciting time and I found the preparation part of my wedding the most fun, tearing pages from magazines and dreaming of what the day would be like. I think the most important thing to remember you have already mentioned in your question, Compromise. It’s such an important day for you both, if your fiancĂ© doesn’t have the attachment to Mariah that you do it wouldn’t be fair to insist on having everything “Mariahised” but I have some ideas for you that should hopefully get a touch of MC incorporated for you.

Table names – instead of using table numbers, name the tables after your favourite songs, take half the tables each and yours could be Mariah tracks. As a suggestion ‘One Sweet Day,’ ‘Dreamlover,’ ‘Lovin’ You Long Time,’ ‘Always Be My Baby’. Might be best to stay away from Clown, Side Affects lol!

Whilst having your meal you could play instrumental versions of songs, the music is so beautiful and it’s in the background so won’t be overpowering. You could also have your first dance to a Mariah song or get a few of your favourites played by the DJ during the night.

If you wanted a more subtle way of getting a hint of Mariah in the day I would opt for the international sign of a lamb – Butterflies! These are so easy to incorporate into the day that if done tastefully you can have them everywhere! Invitations, flower arrangements, cakes, hair clips, shoes, the list is endless, and you could even treat yourself to some of the lovely jewellery M has shown on HSN. Take a look at the ones I’ve found online.

* Invitations - HelloLucky.com
* Hanging guest cards instead of a guestbook – Available at craft stores
* Your local florist can create something like this for you using more goods from craft stores

Your baker can add butterflies to the cake in all sorts of ways:

You could also consider butterfly cupcake wrappers:

* Heels – You could re-use Mariah Carey’s HSN shoe clips after the big day

Have a wonderful wedding!

1 612 Video: Mariah Carey Documentary on ARTE France

The French/German TV channel ARTE aired a half-hour documentary about Mariah Carey in its “Queens of Pop” special series last night, July 27th. Watch ARTE’s Mariah Carey special on YouTube and/or download a video file below.

EXCERPTS:
Daphne Brooks – Instructor, Princeton University: “She is our greatest singing act that we’ve seen in decades, for decades and decades.”

“Our reality shows, they are contests so it’s about being able to triumph in a particular way that is spectacularly satisfying to the masses. And no artist has been more spectacularly satisfying at the level of singing in the past 20 years than Mariah Carey.”

David Lee Brewer – Opera singer/vocal coach: “She’s alone. She’s in her own category.”

“White America believed that they had found ‘The Great White Hope.’ White people everywhere believed that she was white singing like a black girl. And with such a voice! My God! All of my white friends, ‘Have you heard this new Mariah Carey?’ All of a sudden Mariah Carey was all over the scene like in a splash.”

“Mariah Carey is a league of her own. No one can sing as high or as low. This means that you are a phenomenon. That’s what it means. The normal person has 2½ to 3 vocal range. Mariah is off the chart. She makes sounds. She has complete control of her vocal range. And why? Because she studied. She studied with a woman who happens to be her mother, who happens to be a colleague of mine, who’s an opera singer.”

“Her white legion of fans who believed her still identified with her. And because of that she was able to bridge every gap there was. Mariah Carey is single-handedly responsible for bridging the gap between Pop and Hip-hop, and Soul and R&B. She is responsible for bridging all of those. No other singer. She is.”

Diane Warren – Songwriter: “She wrote really accessible songs that have touched people. People connected with her.”

David Morales – DJ/Remixer/Producer: “She’s allowed to be a diva in this business as a female artist, as a professional because she is the sh*t.”

Nick on Mariah's appearance: "My wife was off the chain"

"Extra's" Terri Seymour caught up with "America's Got Talent" host Nick Cannon after the show Tuesday - and he talked about his wife Mariah Carey's recent stint on the Home Shopping Network. "My wife was off the chain," Cannon laughed. "She was running the Home Shopping Network!"
While Carey was on HSN selling her jewelry line, Cannon made a brief appearance. He explained, "Yeah, I just showed, said hello, kissed her, got on a plane and came here. That's love. Show up and do what the missus tells you."

Mariah Carey appears on live TV

New mother and famed crazy-about-town Mariah Carey paid a visit to the Home Shopping Network in the US recently to attempt to sell some of her clothing and jewellery lines to stay-at-home mothers and the unemployed, or anyone else who happens to be near a television at that time of the day. But the problem with this is that Mariah had to be on live TV for a prolonged period of time, making it increasingly difficult to disguise her innate craziness.
Here are some examples the sort of nonsense that Carey was spouting: "Is that butterfly flying around or... something else? It's a butterfly." There wasn't a butterfly. "If they do close-ups of my nails.... I have to cut my nails because of the babies. I can't be sitting there like 'oh!' with long nails".
Mariah eloquently describing how she manicured her digits to better equip herself for managing her children. "Pardon et moi, it's late. Pardon me, it's late". Mariah also took time to exhibit her multilingual skills. Caller: "I don't know if you remember me, I called in February". Mariah: "You did? And you were calling from Illinois? I was in February. Honey, it was bleak for me." Mariah Carey was in February, apparently.
"It was [the pregnancy] so uncomfortable. I'm kind of proud of myself. Pregnant with twins is different than anything. They were all saying to me, 'oh but it's all worth it' and I'm like 'well that's easy for you to say when you're not the one whose feet are this big!'"
Mariah describing the difficulties of being pregnant with twins, not least of which were her discomfort at temporarily having Hobbit-like feet. "Take the camera off me please. And I know you guys hear me. Okay I see it on me. Off."
Mariah admonishing the Home Shopping Channel cameraman on live television. "And because I was pregnant when I was creating this stuff I was like, uh-oh I need a camoflagian (sic) moment. It was instinctual because my body went through so much holding those twins in. You have to keep them in as long as possible, because it's a sacrifice you make for them." Mariah "held the twins in".
"It's a real diamond necklace and it's kind of 'pow'. I wear it as a tiara as well". Of course she has a tiara. Of course she does.

Mariah Carey on HSN: 5 diva lessons learned

Mariah Carey has been getting a bad rap over her recent appearance on HSN in which she peddled everything from her jewelry to bags and fragrances. We think she was doing her. And by "her" we mean she's too rich to care what we think, so she why not let it all hang out? We actually think that couple of hours she spent on TV gave us some valuable lessons. Here's five things we learned from Mariah on HSN.

1. Being a fabulous mom is tough. Having babies and raising them can be difficult and you should be able to express just how much it sucks openly. From her 47 weeks of pregnancy (isn't that more than 11 months?) to the bloated feet and inability to have long fingernails, Mariah isn't about sugarcoating the experience. And we know that aspiring divas can now totally avoid motherhood, because Mariah scared the bejesus out of them.

2. People should be told when they're wrong. If Mariah didn't give that corny name to a piece of jewelry, she will tell you. So what if some marketing person is feeling like they've just been thrown under the bus? The businesswoman in her isn't about to let you think she had anything to do with it. If a model isn't wearing a bag correctly, she should be told. After all, how else does one make the world bend to your desires if you don't tell them how?

3. Express your love as much as you can. There's so much hate in this world that it's refreshing to know that Mariah has no problem expressing her love - more than 70 times during the HSN appearance alone. Can we ever really express our love too much?

4. Who needs math? We're still wondering about that 47 weeks of pregnancy, but Mariah couldn't be bothered to remember numbers - unless it's her bank balance. And as for how much an item costs, what's the HSN host being paid for? Duh. Mariah proves that you don't need advanced math skills to get by.

5. Know your best angles. Even rich and fabulous stars have body issues. And it's nice to see that Mariah not only acknowledges hers, but also makes sure the cameras are not shooting them. After all, fabulosity doesn't just happen. It must be carefully micro-managed.

Mariah on HSN: sales or comedy?

Mariah Carey debuted a new collection of fashion, jewelry, shoes and fragrances in a two-hour spot on HSN last night, during which her antics made it hard to focus on the products she was supposed to be selling. Even the host seemed confused. Highlights included:
"I don't even know what you guys are charging!" Tips on how to mix and match to avoid "Hi, we're twins" moments when wearing jewelry similar to friends. "I need a fragrant moment." Lots of commentary about the "20 zillion cameras," including, "Take the camera off me, please. I know it's on me. Last time we had an issue. I won't get into it." Her insistence that a necklace can double as a tiara.
"There's always drama, it follows me, sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bleak." Although the singer complains to no end about what pregnancy with twins did to her body, she clearly didn't lose her, um, unique personality.

Mariah Carey: divalicious

Diva is as diva does, and Mariah Carey is still all that. The five-time Grammy Award-winner, one of the world's best-selling artists, late on Sunday night showed once again she has more to offer than a five-octave vocal range, including the whistle register.
In a two-hour segment on the American Home Shopping Network, HSN, Carey punted items from her own collection, including jewellery, shoes, fragrances and bags. She also debuted her first apparel range. Carey, 41, got candid in her first major appearance since the birth of her twins, Monroe and Moroccan, in April. She was charming, funny and down to earth - with loads of attitude, of course.
Apart from constantly directing cameramen to avoid close-ups and to take the focus off herself, Carey ordered models around and spewed one-liners that are already being lauded and lambasted in equal measure on the internet: "Why are you not wearing diamonds from head-to-toe?", "I didn't know there was math involved!"
Carey, who's already managed to lose a lot of her pregnancy weight, explained: "There's always drama. It follows me." Speaking to a caller - a lamb, as her fans are known - Carey revisited her appearance on the channel in February to promote her jewellery line. "Honey, it was bleak for me," Mimi said of carrying twins. "I was so uncomfortable back then. My body went through so much. Holding those twins in - you have to keep them in as long as possible. It's a sacrifice you make for them. Literally I was like, 47-weeks pregnant. And anybody pregnant right now, there's push gifts here. Tell your baby-father."
Carey continued, "Everyone was always saying to me, 'Oh but it's all worth it.' And I was like, 'Yeah, well it's easy for you to say when you're not the one whose feet are this big.' It turned into a really difficult time. Being pregnant with twins is different to anything."
Arguably her biggest release, Carey gave birth on her third wedding anniversary with hubby Nick Cannon, who surprised her on the show. The powerhouse diva is also reported to be working on a new album, which could be out by the end of the year, and is still rumoured to be involved in some capacity with the US X Factor version.

Mariah Carey returns with wacky HSN appearance

Oh Mariah Carey, there are no words to express how much we have missed your zany. The songbird has rebounded from the birth of her twins to make her first appearance hawking her wares on HSN. Carey has a thriving business on the shopping channel selling everything from earrings to fragrances, and she's been tweeting all about her return to the small screen.
The singer hopped on air for two hours at midnight Monday, and perhaps it was the lateness of the hour, but Carey was in rare form indeed. The good folks over at Gawker have been kind enough to gather up a few of the singer's most awesome moments, which included several references to birthing twins ("literally I was like 47 weeks pregnant") as well as her directing the camera people to stop shooting her ("Take the camera off me please, I know you guys hear me.")
Our personal favorites? Carey's faux-British accent, which is very reminiscent of the Countess LuAnn de Lesseps from the "Real Housewives of New York" ("hello dahhling"), and her invention of a new word based on camouflage. (Carey explained that while pregnant she "needed a camouflagian moment".) The diva is back!

Mariah Carey opens up about pregnancy on... HSN?

Mariah Carey was in full Mariah mode this weekend when she hit HSN to push her latest fashion line, and the talk turned to Mariah's long and intense pregnancy. Frequently. While showing off her shoes, earrings, purses and other wares, the topic kept going back to Mimi's pregnancy with her twins. She shared about how carrying the twosome was quite the physical challenge, saying:
"I was so uncomfortable and you know that... Pregnant with twins is different than anything. They were always saying to me 'Oh it is all worth it.' I'm like yeah that's easy to say when you're not the one whose feet are this big and it turned into a very difficult time."
She went on later to admit that because she had to keep the twins in her womb for as long as possible, "literally I was like 47 weeks pregnant". And in a brilliant transition, she continued: "Anybody pregnant now - there's push gifts here. Tell ya baby father."
Now that's a saleswoman.
