Mariah has a new album in the works

My beautiful wife is planning to make her return to the music scene after taking time off to focus on the pregnancy and the birth of our two wonderful babies, Moroccan and Monroe. She's rejuvenated and ready to start sharing some of the amazing new music she has been making in the studio.
Our new family has definitely given her a great new source of inspiration and creativity. I'm so proud of her and can't wait for her to release more phenomenal music. Stay tuned for more details... What are some of your favorite Mariah hits? What are you guys hoping to see from her on this next album?
(Nick Cannon)

What songs should've been singles?

After posing the question, "What album tracks over the years do you think should've been released as singles?," in the last "Ask Billboard" (January 20), responses came flooding in. Essentially, what songs do you feel sport radio-ready choruses but never got due process to receive widespread airplay?
Following is a sampling of songs that are well-known to so many despite their lack of a single release. Included, too, are tracks that still could be released. Clearly, Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" isn't the only song that fans wish had become a single. And, as that song reinforces, remaining an album track can still translate to iconic status years later.

Hi Gary. This has bothered me for 17 years: why wasn't "When I Saw You" by Mariah Carey released as a single? In 1995-96, Carey was at one of her (many) career peaks and this ballad could have easily been the fourth Hot 100 No. 1 from her album "Daydream". Columbia chose the admittedly beautiful '50s-styled "Forever" instead (although it didn't give that song a physical CD release).
"When", an ode to love at first sight, would've countered nicely to the themes of loss and longing featured on her other "Daydream"-era singles (i.e., "One Sweet Day"), not to mention its insanely hooky chorus where Carey belts out 16 bars of melisma - without ever taking a breath! (Maybe that's why she, as far I know, has never performed it live?) Such a shame because this track should've been huge (and still could be a hit today).
Artie O'Daly, West Hollywood, California

Hi Artie,. I like "When I Saw You" too, although I can't argue with Columbia having released "Forever". It was actually a bold choice, as not many songs on pop radio in recent decades sound like "Unchained Melody". The waltz rose to No. 9 on Pop Songs in summer 1996.
This e-mail, in fact, deserves its own countdown! Here are my picks for Carey's top five songs that should've been singles, guided by my radio background that taught me that a hook outweighs any other attributes a song may have. Had they been released, Carey might have already passed the Beatles (20) for most Hot 100 No. 1s. She currently has 18.
5. "Languishing (The Interlude)" from "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" (2009). Maybe if Carey had recorded the song in full and not just as a 2-minute, 33-second filler track, it would've been a stronger single candidate. Still, she packs the song's short length with a memorably catchy chorus.
4. "So Blessed" from "Emotions" (1991). A song similar in sound to "When I Saw You", as well as her debut single, "Vision of Love - which spent four weeks atop the Hot 100.
Tie 3. "Reflections (Care Enough)"/"Lead the Way" from "Glitter" (2001). Yes, I'm aware that "Glitter" is one of the most maligned movies in cinema history. Too bad, because I've always felt that its soundtrack contains two of her best ballads. "Lead" was co-written by Carey and Walter Afanasieff, who teamed to pen her hits "Can't Let Go", "Hero" and "Anytime You Need a Friend" (plus the No. 1 song ahead on this ranking).
2. "Whenever You Call" from "Butterfly" (1997). It seemed that the ballad might finally become a single when Carey rerecorded it as a duet with Brian McKnight and revived it on her 1998 compilation "#1's". Although a video was filmed, the song never became a radio single.
1. "All I Ever Wanted" from "Music Box" (1993). Despite her catalog of monster hit singles, my two favorite songs of Carey's are the seasonal "All I Want for Christmas Is You" and this ballad (also co-written with Afanasieff). Who knows, had "All" become the fourth single from "Music Box" instead of the No. 12 Hot 100 hit "Anytime You Need a Friend", Carey might've extended her career-opening streak of top 10s to 12. Instead, her run halted at 11, still a Hot 100 record among new artists matched since by only one act, the singer that prompted this discussion when her streak stopped with the No. 29-peaking "Marry the Night": Lady Gaga.

Billboard Magazine – 21 January 2012 (Best Bets)

In September Mariah Carey posted a picture to her Twitter account hinting that she was back in the studio with Jermaine Dupri. If the song backing her new Jenny Craig commercial is any indication of the direction of the new album, expect another winner from the best-selling artist of the Nielsen SoundScan era.

Mariah & Nick are back in LA.

Mariah and husband Nick Cannon checked out of Aspen Valley Hospital to rush back to Los Angeles and head to Cedar Sinai Hospital on January 4, 2012 in Los Angeles, California. Nick looked to be in a good deal of pain as the two of them made their way off the plane. Mariah and Nick seemed to be in good spirits as they arrived at the hospital and greeted some waiting friends while Nick was put in a wheelchair and rushed inside.

Nick hospitalized for "mild" kidney failure: What is it?

Actor Nick Cannon is in the hospital with what his wife, Mariah Carey, says is mild kidney failure. Carey tweeted a photo of the two of them in Cannon's hospital bed in Colorado, and according to the Ministry of Gossip, Carey posted on her blog, "We're trying to be as festive as possible under the circumstances but please keep Nick in your thoughts because this is very painful."

Although information on Cannon's particular condition is scarce, we got some information on the condition from Dr. Bryan Becker, immediate past president of the National Kidney Foundation. In the medical community, Becker said via a media rep, there really is no term called "mild kidney failure", but he speculates that Cannon might have been hospitalized for some decrease in kidney function.

Acute kidney failure, according to the Mayo Clinic, refers to the sudden inability of the kidneys to archive their main purpose: flushing extra fluids, waste material and salts from the blood. When that happens, those things may build up in the body.

Causes of Cannon's condition, Becker added, could include an illness, dehydration, or taking an over-the-counter medication such as Motrin or Advil. "For someone to have it and to be hospitalized raises an extra level of concern," he said.

As to how fast Cannon, the host of "America's Got Talent" could recover, Becker said if the condition is mild, it would then depend on the cause - more fluids would help him get back to normal if he's dehydrated, or if it's related to another illness, it may get better over time.

Just cuz!

Message from Mariah (in the hospital with Nick)

This is us in the hospital – role reversal; Last year it was me attached to the machines (after having dembabies) and Nick was there with me through it, and now here we are.

We’re trying to be as festive as possible under the circumstances but please keep Nick in your thoughts because this is very painful. They tried to kick me out of the hospital but here I am pon de bed with Mr. C.

We’re doing OK but we’re “straaaaaanded in Aspen”. #DramaticDivaPlace (I know, we could be in a lot worse places) but the truth is as long as we’re together, we’re OK. I’m not trying to make light out of the situation because it’s a serious moment that’s very tough on all of us so please keep us and our family in your prayers. LYM.

Mariah Carey via Twitter: Please pray for Nick as he’s fighting to recover from a mild kidney failure.

Mariah Carey strikes a pose in snowy Aspen

Still situated in the snowy wonderland of Colorado, Mariah Carey was in her usual photo-friendly form in Aspen on Friday night (December 30). The Grammy-winning singer with all smiles as she struck a few poses outside of Joan Boyce's jewelry store. The pop diva let her natural curls show with a cute ponytail while making sure her adoring fans got a chance to snap a photo before heading inside.

In related news, Ms. Carey finds herself on the wrong end of the year-closing poll by BabyNames.com, which ranked her son in a tie for the worst name for a boy in 2011. In the tally of little one's names, Moroccan Scott tied Alicia Silverstone's Bear Blu as the most unsavory moniker while Zuzu Audrey Peterson, daughter of Tania Peterson, was selected as the worst name of any celebrity girl.
